Living Italy Tours
Living Italy tours was created by Neil Moore and Carol Searle, who made a home over 16 years ago from a crumbling tower in a landscape of serene valleys and hills crowned with fortified villages in Umbria.
Join them for a two week exploration of this magical region, where Etruscan arches and Renaissance frescoes create a fascinating mosaic of art and architecture, and ancient piazzas still form the vibrant centres of modern Italian life.
Living Italy tours tineraries focus on art and music, food and wine, traditional crafts, or language, all illuminated by people who are passionate about Umbria, its landscape and its cultural life.
Umbria is full of remarkable examples of Etruscan, Roman and medieval architecture; its walled cities with narrow streets, arches and towers retaining the primeval qualities of an ancient past.
In memorable towns like Assisi and Orvieto, Perugia and Spoleto you can witness the formative periods of Italian fresco painting from the palettes of Giotto, Signorelli, Perugino, Raphael and Lippi, interspersed with opera, chamber and sacred music performances in Romanesque churches and Baroque theatres.
“Living Sicily was the best tour ever! This was truly a memorable holiday, and it exceeded all expectations”
From one central base in Umbria you will enjoy relaxed visits to romantic hilltowns and ancient villages, with prepartory talks on the concerts and art. While in Umbria you will return every night * to the comfort of the Fabrizi family’s sixteenth century farmhouse nestled in the hillside just outside the walls of Montefalco, with spectacular scenery stretching across the valley to the Apennines beyond.
(*Accommodation at Villa Pambuffetti for Taste of Umbria in October)
Montefalco is just ten minutes walk uphill from the guesthouse. From outside, the town still looks very much as it did when Benozzo Gozzoli painted it in the fifteenth century, from the ancient encircling walls to the main tower gate, stone houses and cobbled streets. The enchanting hill town has been nicknamed the ‘Balcony of Umbria’ for its unforgettable views over the patchworked fields of the valley of Umbria. At the cafes and bars, in the winding stone streets or main piazza, you have the rare opportunity to experience life in a foreign country at the pace of local inhabitants.
The accommodation is ideally situated for visits to the nearby hilltowns that are such a feature of this region. You can relax in the shady garden or by the pool, or spend your time strolling past vineyards and olive groves.
The accommodation is spread across four buildings all part of the original complex, with 15 generous rooms. The rooms have been renovated to retain their traditional charm, with terracotta floors, oak beams and shuttered windows, and all are furnished with solid antiques, and new private bathrooms.
Each room has its own new bathroom, independent central heating and color TV. Linen is changed each day. The apartments; Casa del Pastore, Casa Fornacetta and Antico Granaio are available to Living Italy guests, with three comfortable living rooms, cosy fireplaces and separate kitchens for making tea.
Meals feature simple regional cuisine at its best, created with fresh produce from the garden, as well as their own wines and delicious extra virgin olive oil.
Eating in the cosy atmosphere of the antique dining room gives guests the opportunity to feel part of the family, with father and son, Piero and Giuseppe Fabrizi, offering genuine Italian hospitality.
