Had a fast and flat 26km warm down ride around Salta this morning before flying off to Buenos Aires. It completes our 6 day Backroads bicycle trip through Northern Argentina.

We’ve meandered and climbed across the valleys and foothills of the Andes and Pre-Andes and visited wineries from Mendoza to Cafayatte. Our landscapes changed quickly and often as we pedalled past snow- capped peaks and wind-carved desserts – or cactus on the dry high planes interspersed with high rainfall forests and fertile plains.

So much exercise (about 300km over 6 days with mountain passes) makes for guilt free eating. That’s lucky because there’s a lot to eat. The Argentinians love their beef. They make an Aussie BBQ look like a Weight Watchers picnic! I’ve even learnt to wrap empanadas and prepare mate. Transferable skills aren’t they?

Staying in comfortable estancias and remote historic homes gave us an opportunity to connect with the proud and fun-loving Argentinians.

Looking forward to the Virtuoso Symposium in Buenos Aires this coming week.

Note to self:  bring lots of USD cash next time. Credit card fees are high and exchange rate is awful.
